Telefonica, S.A. trades on the BME under the ticker TEF and is a heavyweight member of the IBEX 35 (retained through the June 2026 review). It is an integrated fixed and mobile telecommunications group whose core markets are Spain, Germany, the UK and Brazil. A leadership overhaul, a halved dividend and a near-total exit from Spanish America make it one of the most-debated names in Spanish investor forums (foros de accionistas).
This page does not offer a price target. The fundamentals shareholders reference: for financial year 2025 (reported 24 February 2026) Telefónica posted a net loss of €4,318m, driven by Latin American write-downs, with adjusted net income of €2,122m and revenue of €35,120m (+1.5%); net financial debt stood at €26.8bn (2.8x EBITDA). In the first quarter of 2026, net financial debt fell to €25.3bn and the 2026 targets were reaffirmed. Around the November 2025 Capital Markets Day, the shares fell about 11%. 1. The dividend halving. The most-discussed item is the cut in the dividend per share from €0.30 (2025) to €0.15 in cash for 2026 (payable June 2027). Investors weigh it against the invest-to-grow and deleveraging thesis.
2. The Murtra turnaround and the shareholder register. In a leadership overhaul, the board removed José María Álvarez-Pallete and appointed Marc Murtra (former chairman of Indra) as Executive Chairman (announced 20 January 2025); Emilio Gayo was appointed CEO on 6 March 2025. The register now includes SEPI (the Spanish State) at 10.0% since May 2024 — its first State stake since 1997 — Saudi Arabia's STC at 9.97% of voting rights (with a board seat from 26 February 2025), and CriteriaCaixa building toward about 10%. Investors discuss how State and anchor-shareholder priorities sit alongside those of minority holders; this page frames the register factually and does not speculate on motives.
3. The "Transform & Grow" plan. Unveiled at the 4 November 2025 Capital Markets Day, the 2026–2030 plan concentrates on four core markets and targets €3bn of cost cuts by 2030. On 22 December 2025 Telefónica signed an ERE (collective redundancy) with unions covering 4,539 departures across seven Spanish subsidiaries — a labor-relations item stated here neutrally.
4. The Spanish America (Hispam) exit. Telefónica announced disposals of its Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Ecuador and Mexico operations on 5 November 2025 and completed the sale of Chile on 10 February 2026, with Venezuela flagged as the final exit. Forum users debate whether this was the right call or done at knock-down prices.
5. European consolidation. Chairman Murtra has openly lobbied on M&A; whether Telefónica ends up a buyer or a target is actively discussed, as is whether net-debt/EBITDA of 2.8x genuinely trends down.
Management's qualitative outlook is a "transform and grow" story — four core markets, €3bn of cost cuts by 2030 and deleveraging — after a statutory 2025 loss made noisy by the LatAm wind-down. The early evidence forum users cite is the first-quarter 2026 reduction in net financial debt to €25.3bn and the reaffirmed 2026 targets; whether that 2.8x net-debt/EBITDA ratio genuinely trends lower is the metric the deleveraging thesis rests on. On governance, the State (SEPI) at 10% and Saudi Arabia's STC — holding 9.97% of voting rights with a board seat from 26 February 2025 — as anchor shareholders, together with a State-linked chairman, make this a politically sensitive name; leverage remains high at about €26.8bn of net financial debt. Note also that Telefónica completed its NYSE ADS delisting and SEC Form 15F deregistration around 20 January 2026, moving to CNMV-standard disclosure only.
Telefónica is often read alongside other IBEX heavyweights and, given chairman Murtra's background, alongside Indra. See our companion pages on Indra and Iberdrola, and on Banco Santander.
Many retail investors who follow telecom shares like Telefónica also diversify part of their attention into digital assets. WEEX is a crypto exchange offering crypto futures and spot markets, with a futures-first range for traders who want leverage and hedging on assets such as Bitcoin and Ether. To be clear: Telefónica shares do not trade on WEEX — the equity trades on the BME. WEEX is a separate venue for the crypto side of a diversified watchlist.
