The U.S. employment report for July came in weaker than consensus projections. Job openings fell short of expectations, and revisions from previous months reinforced a picture of deceleration in the American labor market. For those following cryptocurrencies, this data matters for a simple reason: it directly alters the bets on what the Federal Reserve will do with interest rates in September.

Bitcoin was fluctuating around $64,900 after the announcement, practically stable over 24 hours, but with a cumulative increase of 3.1% for the week. However, the contained reaction hides a significant change in the scenario. If interest rates stop rising, the opportunity cost of holding risk assets decreases, and crypto historically benefits from this environment.

The numbers were clear. Job creation in July came in below expectations, but the most impactful data came from the revisions. May's employment in the U.S. was revised down from 129,000 to 63,000 jobs. June's was revised from 57,000 to just 20,000. These are drops of 51% and 65%, respectively. In practical terms, the American economy generated far fewer jobs than previously thought over the last three months.

This type of revision matters because the Fed looks at trends, not isolated data points. A sequence of weak numbers changes the narrative. Before the payroll report, the market priced in a 55% chance of an interest rate hike at the September meeting, against 45% for maintenance. After the results, the probability of maintenance jumped to 57.9%, while the likelihood of a hike fell to 42.1%, according to CME Group's FedWatch.

This reversal of expectations is the most relevant data for the crypto market in the short term. As discussed in previous analyses about the impact of monetary policy on digital assets, the correlation between interest rate expectations and flows into crypto has intensified since 2022.

The logic is straightforward. When U.S. Treasury bonds pay 5% per year with virtually zero risk, institutional investors have less incentive to allocate capital to volatile assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum. This dynamic has drained billions from the crypto market throughout the monetary tightening cycle that began in 2022.

With the payroll suggesting that the economy is slowing down, the Fed gains arguments to pause interest rate hikes. If this is confirmed, the attractiveness differential between fixed income and crypto decreases. It is no coincidence that Bitcoin's best moments in recent years occurred precisely when the market anticipated the end of the tightening cycle.

It is worth remembering that this same thesis propelled Bitcoin from $27,000 to $45,000 between October and December 2023, when the market began to price in interest rate cuts. The context has changed, but the mechanics remain: expectations about monetary policy continue to be the main short-term driver for risk assets.

An additional factor limits Bitcoin's more significant recovery at this moment. The capital flow into technology stocks linked to artificial intelligence remains robust. Companies like Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta reported billion-dollar investments in AI infrastructure, attracting capital that, in other cycles, could have migrated to cryptocurrencies.

This competition for capital is a relatively new phenomenon. In previous Bitcoin bull cycles, there was not such a strong narrative competing for the same investor profile. The AI thesis offers exposure to exponential growth with the relative safety of publicly listed companies and real revenue. For investors seeking risk with high return potential, big techs have become a concrete alternative to crypto.

The crypto market's fear and greed index illustrates this caution. The indicator marks 40 points, still in the fear zone, although it has risen from 32 the previous week. Readings below 25 historically indicate buying opportunities, while those above 75 tend to precede corrections. The current level suggests an indecisive market, waiting for a clearer trigger.

Ethereum was trading up 0.1% over 24 hours and had accumulated a gain of 2.8% for the week. The discreet performance reflects the same cautious environment surrounding Bitcoin. XRP, on the other hand, was up 0.6% on the day but had accumulated a loss of 2.1% over seven days, showing that altcoins remain more vulnerable to profit-taking movements.

The pattern is consistent with what is observed in phases of macroeconomic transition. When the market does not yet have conviction about the Fed's next move, liquidity tends to concentrate in Bitcoin, which acts as a relative safe haven within the crypto universe. Altcoins tend to perform better when BTC breaks resistances and risk appetite becomes generalized.

For those closely following the market, Bitcoin's on-chain behavior in the coming weeks will be more revealing than the price itself. Metrics such as transaction volume, exchange outflows, and long-term holder behavior can anticipate whether the market is preparing for a new upward impulse or merely consolidating before a correction.

Three points deserve attention in the coming weeks. First, the inflation data for July in the U.S. If inflation cools alongside employment, the case for pausing interest rates becomes practically sealed. Second, the flow into spot Bitcoin ETFs. Consistent inflows indicate real institutional demand, regardless of short-term volatility.

Third, the Fed meeting in September. The market has already begun to position itself, but the committee's communication between now and the decision could change the bets again. Bitcoin in the range of $64,000 to $65,000 seems to price in a neutral scenario. The payroll data opened the door for something more optimistic, but the market still needs confirmation.

The practical conclusion is that the payroll did not dramatically change Bitcoin's price, but it changed the probabilities. And in the financial market, probabilities move capital before the facts.
