Israel Sticks to Withdrawal Conditions in Gaza and Lebanon Negotiations
Negotiations between Israel regarding Gaza and Lebanon are ongoing, but progress is hindered by intertwined conditions of disarmament and withdrawal. In Gaza, issues surrounding the release of hostages and disarmament with Hamas are at play, while in Lebanon, the disarmament of Hezbollah and the withdrawal of Israeli forces are entangled. According to the Jerusalem Post, former commander Oren Avman assessed that diplomatic efforts have been 'largely ineffective.' He raised questions about contacts with Hamas, viewing the hostage issue as justifiable for negotiations, but doubting the effectiveness of the disarmament process. On the Gaza front, there were reports of former Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar having direct contact with Hamas, which was revealed by Israeli military censorship. On the Lebanon front, Israel has stated that it will not withdraw until Hezbollah is disarmed. Israel and Lebanon agreed on the disarmament of Hezbollah and the phased withdrawal of Israeli forces during negotiations in Washington on June 26, and discussed the expansion of the pilot zone and border issues during negotiations in Rome on August 4. Within Lebanon, Hezbollah's leader has criticized the negotiations as 'humiliating,' leading to increased backlash. Avman's concerns emphasize that both fronts are not meant to be linked together, but rather highlight that disarmament and the withdrawal of Israeli forces are core issues in both negotiations.
