Former Los Angeles Police Officer Sentenced to Life for Kidnapping and Robbing Bitcoin

Former Los Angeles Police Department officer Eric Halem has been sentenced to life in prison for armed kidnapping of a 17-year-old boy in Koreatown, Los Angeles, in December 2024, and for stealing a hard drive containing $350,000 worth of Bitcoin. The sentence includes an additional 15 years, with both terms to be served concurrently. Judge Mildred Escobedo of the Los Angeles County Superior Court issued the ruling on Tuesday, rejecting the defense's request for a retrial. Halem must serve most of the 15-year sentence before beginning his life sentence, and he may apply for parole after serving 7 years. Halem was found guilty of kidnapping and robbery by a jury after a two-week trial in March of this year. Prosecutors alleged that Halem, along with three accomplices, broke into a high-rise apartment and threatened the victim with death to force him to hand over the hard drive containing the Bitcoin. Halem had left the Los Angeles Police Department nearly two years prior to the incident but was still serving as a reserve officer at the time. He is also facing pending charges for insurance fraud and another cryptocurrency-related robbery, with his co-defendants yet to be tried.
