Disney+ Releases a Documentary with Tom Hiddleston About Pompeii You Must Watch This Weekend

Disney+ has added to its catalog "Pompeii: Beyond Time", a new documentary series that reconstructs one of the most remembered natural disasters in history: the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that buried the Roman city in the year 79.

The proposal from National Geographic features Tom Hiddleston, known for portraying Loki in the Marvel universe. The actor leads the narrative to explore the ruins and discover what really happened to its inhabitants before and during the catastrophe.

The series presents a reconstruction of the last hours of Pompeii before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius on August 24, 79. Tom Hiddleston guides the viewer through an investigation that combines history and technology to reveal new insights about daily life in ancient Rome.

The production includes contributions from archaeologists, geologists, and disaster management specialists, who provide scientific evidence to analyze what really occurred during the tragedy.

One of the main objectives of the documentary is to challenge the long-held belief that all inhabitants died without a chance to escape. Based on recent findings, it shows that many people may have had opportunities to survive.

The narrative follows three real characters, based on archaeological discoveries, representing different sectors of Roman society: Lucius Avianius, a young blacksmith apprentice; Julia Phoenix, a businesswoman who owned a bathhouse; and a praetorian guard found on the beach of Herculaneum alongside his sword.

The title also aims to show what life was like before the eruption. Among the ruins, traces of the inhabitants' activities still appear: houses, markets, work tools, and personal belongings. This perspective allows for a reconstruction of Pompeii as a place full of stories, connections, and projects.

Hiddleston explained that his connection to the city began long before this production, when he visited the city at the age of 17. "It was my first trip without adult supervision. So there were no teachers, no parents, no adults. It was just two friends and me," he recalled in a conversation with Esquire.

"What results from a site like Pompeii is that you arrive here and feel how 2,000 years compress and collapse," the actor explained while describing the sensation of walking through the ruins and added: "It felt like a journey through time. I felt like I was suddenly walking into the past".

"There is bread in the oven, and there are cradles for children, and a market where people sold fruit and fish. They had farmers, and their children drew on the walls, and you think: these people were like us," he detailed.

However, when referring to the Temple of Apollo and its rituals, he emphasized that this society had significant differences from today: "And in many ways, they were not like us."

The performer shared that the intention was not to create a traditional narration like typical documentaries: "I didn't want to stay in a fixed position in front of a camera telling you a story that I feel you already knew".
