AI girlfriend apps generate 427.3 million dollars in consumer spending

AI girlfriend apps have generated 165.3 million downloads and 427.3 million dollars in consumer spending worldwide since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. Analytics firm Appfigures identified 214 NSFW and romantic AI companion apps, which generated 162.8 million dollars in consumer spending during the first half of 2026. Zeta ranked first in gross revenue with 33 million dollars, followed by Tipsy Chat: Live Your Story with 15.2 million dollars, ChatBox: AI Chat Bot Assistant with 13 million dollars, Crushie AI: Chat & Companion with 8.8 million dollars, and Emochi: Chat With Character with 7.5 million dollars. Emochi was the most downloaded app with 7.9 million installs, followed by Amora: A Hint of Your Soulmate with 3.6 million downloads. PG/general AI apps had nearly twice as many downloads but generated similar revenue, totaling 164.8 million dollars in the first half of 2026. Research indicates that 15% of partnered U.S. adults aged 18 to 30 regularly use AI romantic companions, with many concealing their usage from partners. In May 2026, Joi AI announced a campaign to pay 10 individuals 2,000 dollars a month to test an AI-guided feature, attracting over 150,000 applicants by July 2026.
