Zcash Begins ZCSH Trading After Addressing Orchard Vulnerability

Zcash (ZEC) has expanded institutional accessibility by integrating transaction privacy into its blockchain. In unofficial transactions, the sender, receiver, and amount are concealed, and the validity of transactions is verified through zero-knowledge proofs. On May 29, security researcher Taylor Hornby reported a soundness vulnerability in the Orchard shield protocol, but the community stated that there was no evidence of actual exploitation. On July 28, Zcash activated the Ironwood NU6.3 upgrade at block height 3,428,143. This upgrade was designed to introduce a new shield pool while limiting the existing Orchard pool. On August 25, Grayscale began trading the exchange-traded product ZCSH, which exposes Zcash's spot price. Following the launch of ZCSH, there was a net inflow of $34.4 million, and on September 4, the price of Zcash reached $1,023. According to JetStats, as of September 7, 2026, of the 16.92 million ZEC issued, approximately 4.876 million ZEC are in the shield pool, with a shield proportion of 28.8% based on supply. CoinDesk research analyzed that in February 2026, the proportion of shielded transactions in Zcash trading reached 59.3%. Zcash has an optional privacy structure that allows users to choose transparent transactions. The Ironwood transition addresses supply integrity issues, but the strength of privacy depends on how much funding and users gather in the shield pool.
