Waymo Plans to Launch Self-Driving Taxis in Munich by 2027
Waymo will begin testing autonomous vehicles in Munich in the coming weeks, aiming to provide public robotaxi services by the end of 2027. The operation will start with a small fleet of fully electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles, equipped with safety drivers. The vehicles are expected to operate in areas such as Maxvorstadt, Au-Haidhausen, and Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt, with the goal of mapping local streets and assessing the performance of its driverless technology. Waymo has established subsidiaries in Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, France, and Switzerland, and has set up a company in South Korea. Despite the Munich plans, Waymo has yet to receive approval in Germany for its Level 4 autonomous driving system, which can operate fully autonomously under certain conditions. Waymo is working with federal and local authorities. Germany is seen as an important market, having established a legal framework for Level 4 vehicles since 2021. The market is competitive, with Mobileye and Volkswagen already obtaining testing permits in Germany. Public mobility services in Munich are expected to lag behind London, where Waymo plans to begin services in September.
