Trump Pushes for Summit with Kim Jong-un This Fall

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, is reportedly pushing for a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un this fall. With the midterm elections in November approaching, Trump is looking for diplomatic achievements and has revived the prospect of U.S.-North Korea diplomacy. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that President Trump has instructed his aides to facilitate a face-to-face meeting with Kim. The timing of the summit could coincide with his upcoming trip to Asia, potentially linked to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, China, in November. Although official preparations for the meeting have not yet begun, there is a possibility for a summit given that Trump has expressed a desire to reunite with Kim. This move is drawing attention as it aligns with the midterm election schedule, and there are analyses suggesting that Trump is seeking diplomatic successes amid failures regarding Iran. Recently, the directive to reduce U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises (UFS) is being interpreted as a signal for dialogue with Kim. However, even if the summit takes place, it seems unlikely that denuclearization negotiations will be revived. North Korea has expanded its nuclear warheads and missile capabilities over the past seven years, and the U.S. does not officially recognize North Korea as a nuclear power. During the talks, the possibility of a 'limited agreement' such as a freeze on nuclear and missile activities is being raised rather than complete denuclearization.
