Sphere 3D faces 2.2 million dollar tariff claim on Bitcoin miners
Sphere 3D could face approximately 2.2 million dollars in supplemental US tariffs on Bitcoin miners purchased in 2022 by a subsidiary it now owns. US Customs and Border Protection classified the equipment as Chinese-origin goods, despite seller-provided import documents claiming otherwise. Sphere 3D plans to protest the allegation, which it deems meritless, and the amount payable remains uncertain. As of June 30, Sphere 3D reported over 2.8 million dollars in cash, 0.2 million dollars in working capital, and approximately 5.9 million dollars in current liabilities. The potential tariff claim represents about 77% of its cash balance and roughly 11 times its reported working capital. The company also reported over 9 million dollars in first-half operating cash use and nearly 5.3 million dollars in proceeds from Bitcoin sales. Management expressed concerns about the company's ability to continue without additional funding. Sphere 3D has the capacity to sell up to 10.3 million dollars of shares through its at-the-market equity program, but proceeds depend on actual sales. The company plans to protest the tariff claim within the federal customs rules timeframe.
