Singapore's consumer prices rose by 2.2% in July compared to the same month last year. This marks the highest level in nearly two years, but it fell short of the market expectation of 2.3%. The consumer price index increased from a 1.9% rise in June to 2.2% in July. Month-on-month, consumer prices dropped by 0.2%, while core inflation, excluding private transport and housing costs, rose by 2.0%, below the expected 2.2%. The increase in energy prices was a major contributing factor, as Singapore relies heavily on imports for energy and food. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has tightened its monetary policy and warned of rising import price pressures in the future. The government announced a support package worth approximately SGD 2 billion in response to the Iran war, which includes cash payments, consumption vouchers, and corporate tax rebates. The growth rate forecast has been revised upward to 4.5% to 5.5% until 2026. Although this inflation rate was lower than expected, upward pressures still exist, and the trends in energy prices and import costs are likely to be key indicators for future price assessments.
