OpenAI Reduces AI Model Prices by 80% and 20%
OpenAI has lowered the cost of using its entry-level and mid-tier artificial intelligence models. The price reduction aims to strengthen the company's position against cheaper Chinese alternatives amid a decrease in corporate spending on AI technologies. The cost of using the GPT-5.6 Luna model has decreased by 80%, while the Terra model has seen a 20% reduction. Prices for the flagship Sol model remain unchanged. Analysts note that the cut in expenses from corporate clients is forcing American labs to rethink their pricing strategies. The price drop also puts pressure on OpenAI's competitor, Anthropic, whose Claude models remain more expensive. Changes in OpenAI's rates for 1 million tokens: GPT-5.6 Luna -- the cost of input text has decreased from $1 to $0.20, and the generated response has dropped from $6 to $1.20; Terra -- the cost of input data has reduced from $2.50 to $2, and output data has decreased from $15 to $12. Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4.6 model costs $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. OpenAI explained the price reduction by citing increased internal efficiency of the GPT-5.6 models. Despite the lower token prices, overall expenses for businesses may rise due to the shift to pay-per-use. The number of OpenAI agent users has reached 10 million since the launch of ChatGPT Work.
