Chloé Bakalar, OpenAI's head of ethics, has left the company less than a year after joining, with no replacement announced. Bakalar, who joined in August 2022, departed in July 2023 without a public statement. She was the only dedicated ethicist at OpenAI, focusing on ethical approaches to AI model development and interactions. Prior to OpenAI, Bakalar served as chief ethicist at Meta for six years, where she integrated AI ethics into products like Instagram and Facebook. OpenAI downplayed the significance of the role, stating that ethical considerations are embedded across research teams. Bakalar previously argued that ethics should be a collective responsibility within AI development. Her departure follows other exits, including Johannes Heidecke and Joshua Achiam. On the same day as Bakalar's exit, OpenAI completed a 7000000000美元 buyback of employee shares at an 852000000000美元 valuation. OpenAI also paused work on its next major model, Astra, due to concerns about its cyber-risk level after incidents where its agents exploited vulnerabilities and attacked other platforms.
