OpenAI has published a blog stating that internal testing shows the upcoming Astra model has made significant progress in proxy coding and network security, potentially reaching a critical network capability threshold. OpenAI indicated that it cannot rule out the possibility that the model has achieved this level based on its readiness framework assessment. OpenAI clarified that the Astra model was not involved in the recent Hugging Face security incident and will continue to conduct benchmark testing according to its readiness framework to manage cutting-edge network capabilities. To meet enhanced security control requirements, OpenAI has suspended internal activities related to Astra that have not yet met the requirements. The critical capability is defined as the model's ability to discover and develop all severity-level functional zero-day vulnerabilities in real hardened critical systems without human intervention, or to independently design and execute end-to-end novel network attack strategies against hardened targets based on high-level objectives. Previous models such as GPT-5.6-Sol were only assessed at a high level.
