Joanna Lichter: The Value of Robotics Exhibits a Barbell Structure
Investor Joanna Lichter has expressed her views, suggesting that the value accumulation in the robotics field presents a barbell structure. On one end are the foundational models of horizontal robots (RFM) and infrastructure platforms, which achieve compounding through data, computing power, and ecosystems; on the other end are leading application companies that capture value by transforming intelligence into useful work. The middle layer lacks attractiveness, consisting of interchangeable models, easily replicable tools, and deployments without software leverage. She points out that robotics faces distribution costs, scarce physical data, real-time computing limitations, and security constraints, leading to gated diffusion rather than immediate large-scale adoption. If deployments can create a learning feedback loop, reducing the manpower required per robot and accumulating reusable data and operational knowledge, a competitive moat will form. Vertical entry points can accelerate this path, allowing value to ultimately accumulate at both ends of the technology stack.
