Jensen Huang Says Open and Closed Source AI Models Will Coexist Long-Term

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang stated in a podcast interview with Bloomberg that open models and closed models will coexist long-term, serving different needs. Closed models are typically easier to use and less costly, but companies that need to control data, expertise, service levels, or national sovereignty must still build AI based on open models. Huang emphasized that open models are crucial for security, cybersecurity, innovation, startups, and technological sovereignty. Closed models are not inherently more secure and can still be subject to hacking, theft, or internal leaks. The AI industry should establish large-scale distributed self-defense capabilities rather than relying on a single defense node. He cited the security incident at Hugging Face as an example, stating that when proprietary models could not assist in troubleshooting, Hugging Face used the open model GLM 5.2 to identify vulnerabilities and quickly fix them, demonstrating that open models can provide necessary self-defense capabilities and highlighting the importance of diversity in AI technology.
