Google Wallet Adds Zero-Knowledge Proofs to Boost Privacy in Digital ID Rollout

Google is rolling out zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) technology in its digital ID system, starting with the UK and soon expanding to the United States and other countries, according to a blog post published Tuesday. The integration aims to offer users a way to verify their age online without revealing personal details — a growing privacy concern as more platforms require identity checks. “We wanted to develop a system that not only verifies age, but does it in a way that protects your privacy,” Google explained. ZKPs allow someone to prove a fact — like being over 18 — without disclosing any other information, such as name or birthdate. While it remains unclear if the ZKP framework used ties into blockchain or crypto-native zero-knowledge systems, Google confirmed it will make the tech open-source, enabling other wallets and digital platforms to adopt it. This move signals a mainstream tech embrace of privacy-preserving digital identity tools, potentially setting a precedent for how web platforms handle personal data verification in the future.
