Expansion of $69.8 Billion Stablecoin Payments

Stablecoins are spreading in online payments, subscriptions, and marketplace settlements. According to a Visa report, the retail scale of USD Coin (USDC), Tether (USDT), and PayPal Dollar (PYUSD) is expected to increase from $500 million in 2019 to $69.8 billion by 2025. Two out of five Gen Z social media users responded that cryptocurrencies are the future of online financial transactions. Stripe supports U.S. businesses in accepting stablecoin payments, allowing customers to choose their preferred stablecoin and payment network. Subscription-based stablecoin payments are also set to be unveiled in October 2025. PayPal supports cryptocurrency payments at online checkout, and refunds can be processed in PayPal Dollars or other stablecoins. According to Stripe's survey, 57% of independent workers expressed a desire for stablecoin payments. Currently, 18% of independent workers in emerging markets are receiving payments in stablecoins. The Federal Reserve analyzed that the market capitalization of stablecoins reached $317 billion as of April 2026. The European Central Bank warned that the concentration of dollar-pegged stablecoins could lead to liquidity and operational risks.
