Demand for Electric Cars in Ukraine Dropped to 14,000 Registrations in the First Half of 2026
In the first half of 2026, registrations of electric vehicles in Ukraine totaled 14,000 units, which is half of the 31,400 recorded during the same period in 2025. The decline is attributed to the expiration of the zero VAT rate. Until December 31, 2025, buyers could register cars without the standard tax refund, but in 2026, with a VAT of 20%, the market stabilized. Over the past decade, the structure of electric vehicle sales has gone through three phases: from 2017 to 2021, Nissan led the market thanks to the import of used Leaf models; in 2022-2023, Volkswagen took the top spot with the ID.4 and ID.6 crossovers; from 2024 to 2026, Tesla has maintained its leadership due to price reductions on the Model 3 and Model Y. The share of Chinese manufacturers has also increased: BYD ranked third in the first half of 2026, surpassing Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Kia. The Zeekr model entered the top ten in 2025 and continues to hold its position in 2026. Analysts noted that Ukrainian electric car consumers have become more pragmatic, shifting from purchasing 5-year-old Nissan Leafs to new technologies from China and a broader selection of Teslas.
