Coinbase CEO: Bitcoin is Digital Gold, Stablecoins are Payment Methods

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong stated that Bitcoin serves as a "store of value" while stablecoins function as a "medium of exchange." In a YouTube interview on the 19th, Armstrong explained that Bitcoin was created as a hedge against inflation during the 2008 financial crisis. With a capped supply of 21 million coins, Bitcoin has established itself as "digital gold," but due to its price volatility and limitations in payment processing, it is not used as a regular payment method. In contrast, stablecoins perfectly replace the everyday medium of exchange role that Bitcoin does not fulfill, growing 3 to 4 times each year. Armstrong emphasized that stablecoins enable immediate payments while providing interest income to customers. He also predicted that AI agents could use stablecoins to process small payments at low fees, making stablecoins the financial infrastructure for "AI agent commerce."
