Blockstream Evaluates Post-Quantum Signature Schemes for Bitcoin, Chooses Falcon-1024
Blockstream has released a report evaluating the applicability of three post-quantum signature schemes—Dilithium, Falcon, and Hawk—in Bitcoin. The report notes that Hawk has been withdrawn due to related attacks; Dilithium is the easiest to implement and has a key derivation path, but its signature and public key sizes are too large for Bitcoin; Falcon offers the best overall balance in terms of compactness, verification speed, and mature assumptions, with feasible mitigation strategies for the floating-point signature issue. The report concludes that if a post-quantum signature scheme must be chosen for Bitcoin, Falcon-1024 would be the selection.
