The Ethereum account abstraction draft EIP-8130 is set to be included in Base's Cobalt upgrade scheduled for September 2026. EIP-8130 aims to simplify the wallet verification process through a new transaction type and on-chain key store. According to official documents, EIP-8130 is classified as 'Account Abstraction by Account Configuration,' with the author being Coinbase developer Chris Hunter. EIP-8130 utilizes a new transaction type based on EIP-2718 and operates by registering validators and verifying a set of allowed validators for transactions. The initial standard validators include k1, p256, passkey, and delegate, with k1 being linked to the existing Ethereum account system. Account abstraction encompasses features such as transaction bundling, gas payment delegation, and key management, aiming for a more flexible account layer compared to the existing EOA structure. Base has stated that it will include EIP-8130-based native account abstraction in the Cobalt upgrade. Based on USD Coin transfers, ERC-4337 transactions have reduced from 125,000 gas to 46,000 gas, a decrease of 63.2%. However, this is a comparative value for specific cases and is premature to generalize as the overall cost reduction rate for account abstraction transactions. Currently, EIP-8130 is not a final standard, and Base's reference implementation repository is still in progress. The next checkpoint will be whether EIP-8130 is incorporated into the Cobalt upgrade in September 2026 and the results of community review.
