Apple is combining Alibaba's artificial intelligence model Qwen with its Chinese version of Apple Intelligence. This integration follows the announcement by Chinese authorities regarding the registration of generative AI services. The Cyberspace Administration of China announced on July 15 that seven smartphone manufacturers, including Apple, have completed the registration of their generative AI services. The registered companies include Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Samsung, and Nubia. China requires pre-registration for large language models and generative AI services offered to the public. Reuters reported that Apple's on-device generative AI service has passed the registration process for iPhone users in China. Alibaba stated that the Qwen model will be integrated into the Apple Intelligence features of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS. The service will include text and image generation and understanding capabilities. Baidu is also collaborating on the development of Apple Intelligence features for iPhone users in China. This matter relates to Apple's efforts to reduce the gap in AI capabilities in its Chinese operations. Apple announced on June 8 in its official Chinese newsroom that the new Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features could have different launch timelines depending on regulatory approval. Apple explained that Siri AI and other new Apple Intelligence features are not yet available in mainland China. According to market sources, Apple is expected to launch AI tools in China within the next few months, with a China-specific AI model reportedly trained with the support of Alibaba.
