Sandisk stock surprised the market again, but not in the way many traders expected. Sandisk stock fell below $1,300 after the company reported record quarterly revenue of $8.97 billion, adjusted EPS of $39.25, and a massive $14 billion buyback. For a stock that had already become one of the market’s most closely watched AI and storage names, the reaction shows how Sandisk stock is now trading less on past results and more on what management says comes next. This article breaks down what the quarter really showed, why guidance mattered more than the beat, and what beginners should watch from here.

    At a Glance

    • Sandisk posted Q4 revenue of $8.97 billion, above the $8.39 billion expectation, while adjusted EPS of $39.25 also beat the $34.51 consensus.
    • The stock still dropped because Q1 FY2027 guidance of $10.3 billion to $10.8 billion came in below analyst expectations.
    • Gross margin near 80% to 81% points to unusually strong pricing power and mix, but investors are questioning how long that can last.
    • The $14 billion buyback was large, yet it did not offset concerns that NAND pricing may be approaching a cyclical high.
    • For now, Sandisk remains a high-upside but high-volatility storage cycle trade rather than a simple buy-and-hold growth story.

What the Q4 Results Actually Showed

On the surface, the quarter looked hard to criticize. Sandisk reported $8.97 billion in Q4 revenue, comfortably ahead of the $8.39 billion analysts were looking for. Adjusted EPS came in at $39.25, above the $34.51 consensus. Gross margin around 80% to 81% added to the strength of the report.

That kind of print usually pushes a stock higher, especially in semiconductors and storage, where strong revenue often signals solid demand and tight supply. In Sandisk’s case, the results fit the broader trend investors had already been following for months: AI data center demand is lifting enterprise SSD demand, product mix is improving, and memory pricing has been moving in the right direction.

The company’s earlier quarterly updates had already shown that pattern building. Sandisk’s fiscal Q2 revenue was $3 billion, up 31% sequentially, according to the company’s earnings call materials. Public research cited by Alpha Spread also pointed to strong momentum in later quarters, including better pricing, higher-value products, and data center growth. So Q4 did not come out of nowhere. It was the latest and strongest proof point in a trend the market had largely priced in.

Why the Q1 FY2027 Guidance Miss Overrode the Beat

If Q4 was about validation, the stock move was about expectations. That is the key point for beginners. Stocks do not just react to whether a company beats estimates. They react to whether the new outlook raises or lowers the future earnings path.

Sandisk’s Q1 FY2027 guidance of $10.3 billion to $10.8 billion landed below what analysts were expecting. Once that happened, the narrative changed quickly. Instead of asking how strong the quarter was, the market started asking whether earnings and revenue were close to a short-term peak.

This explains why the share price fell from roughly $1,427 to below $1,300 despite the strong headline numbers. The move also fits what we have seen in recent months across memory and storage names. According to the provided market updates, Sandisk has already experienced several sharp drops this year, including daily declines of around 6%, 7%, more than 10%, and even 14% during weaker sessions for storage and chip stocks. In other words, this is a stock with strong fundamentals but very unstable sentiment.

That kind of price action is common in cyclical sectors. When investors believe the best conditions may be peaking, even excellent results can trigger selling.

What $8.97 Billion in Revenue at 80% Gross Margin Actually Means

For long-term analysis, the most important number in the quarter may not be EPS. It may be the combination of very high revenue and gross margin at the same time.

Revenue of $8.97 billion tells us demand remained strong across Sandisk’s flash and storage business. Gross margin near 80% to 81% tells us the company did not need to chase that demand with aggressive discounting. That usually means three things are working together: pricing power, favorable product mix, and constrained supply.

In practical terms, this is what a strong memory upcycle looks like. Enterprise customers are buying, AI infrastructure spending is supporting higher-end storage demand, and producers have enough discipline to protect margins. Sandisk’s recent investor relations updates also support that broader picture. The company highlighted BiCS10 1Tb TLC 3D NAND sampling in July and announced new progress with SK hynix on high-bandwidth flash standards in August. Those updates suggest that the market’s focus is shifting from the post-spin story to technology execution and earnings quality.

Still, investors should be careful about treating an 80%-plus margin as a permanent baseline. In semiconductors, especially NAND, margins can expand quickly in tight cycles and contract quickly when supply catches up. That is why some outside commentary in the research materials argues current pricing power may look more like a cyclical high than a lasting structural reset.

The $14 Billion Buyback That the Guidance Miss Overshadowed

A $14 billion share repurchase authorization is a major capital return signal. It tells investors that management believes the business is generating enough cash to fund operations, invest in technology, and still buy back a meaningful amount of stock.

Normally, that would be a powerful support for sentiment. Buybacks can reduce share count, improve per-share earnings over time, and send a message that leadership sees value in the stock. But timing matters. When the market is worried about the next quarter or the next turn in the cycle, a buyback often gets treated as secondary.

That seems to be what happened here. The market looked past the financial strength behind the repurchase because guidance changed the debate. Investors were no longer asking whether Sandisk had cash. They were asking whether this is the best the cycle gets.

For traders, that distinction matters. A big buyback can help during a valuation reset, but it usually does not stop a stock from falling if forward expectations are being cut.

Whether the Guidance Miss Is a Timing Issue or a Trend Change

This is the real question now. Is the softer Q1 FY2027 outlook just a pause after a very strong run, or is it early evidence that demand and pricing are cooling faster than bulls expected?

There are arguments on both sides. The bullish case is still easy to understand. Sandisk remains a pure-play NAND and storage name with clear exposure to AI data center demand. Official company materials show another major catalyst is coming with Investor Day on August 13, 2026. Wall Street also remains broadly positive. Investing.com shows 22 analysts with an average 12-month price target of $2,217.77 and an overall buy consensus, though the range from $1,000 to $3,169 shows just how wide the disagreement is. ChartMill also shows short float at about 5.37%, which suggests there is skepticism but not extreme bearish crowding.

The more cautious case is also credible. MarketBeat’s lower consensus target of $1,811.38 shows valuation is far from settled. The SEC separation materials warn about market, financial, regulatory, and operational risks tied both to the flash business and to execution after the spin-off from Western Digital. If NAND pricing is closer to a peak than investors assumed, then even strong revenue may not protect the stock from derating.

My read is that this looks more like a timing issue than a confirmed trend break, but the burden of proof has shifted back to management. After such a sharp rally, Sandisk no longer gets the benefit of the doubt. It has to keep proving that pricing, data center SSD demand, and margin strength can continue.

What the Setup Looks Like After the Decline

After the drop below $1,300, Sandisk stock becomes a more interesting setup than it was at the highs, but it is not automatically cheap just because it pulled back. Beginners should think in scenarios, not in slogans.

If the Q1 guidance miss is only a conservative reset, then the selloff may look like a normal repricing inside a still-strong upcycle. In that case, investors will focus on whether Investor Day adds confidence around demand visibility, technology leadership, and multi-quarter margin durability.

If the guidance miss turns out to be the first sign of softer NAND pricing or weaker enterprise storage momentum, then the stock may still need time to re-rate lower. That is especially true in a market that has already rewarded Sandisk heavily since the spin-off.

For risk management, this is not the kind of name most beginners should chase emotionally after either a big rally or a one-day collapse. It behaves more like a high-beta cycle stock than a stable compounder. The better approach is to watch three things closely: future revenue guidance, gross margin direction, and management’s tone around AI-driven storage demand. Those are the variables that will likely matter more than backward-looking earnings beats.

Sandisk’s latest quarter was strong enough to confirm that the company is benefiting from a powerful storage cycle, but the stock reaction was a reminder that markets price the next step, not the last one. For investors who understand volatility, the post-earnings decline may create opportunity. For everyone else, this is a useful case study in how valuation, guidance, and cycle risk can overpower even record numbers.
